pH is a measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution. The pH scale ranges from 1 to 14, with low numbers representing acidic solutions, and high numbers representing alkali solutions. A buffer is a solution that can resist a change in pH caused by other chemicals and is used in both chemistry and biological systems.
  1. Buffer Composition

    • In order for a buffer to effectively maintain a pH within a certain range, it must have both an acidic and an alkali component. Examples of buffers include a mixture of acetic acid and sodium acetate or a mixture of ammonia and ammonium hydroxide. When an acidic or alkali solution is added to a buffer, individual components of the buffer are able to neutralize the solution to maintain the target pH.
