French Activities for Beginners

Learning French can be challenging for beginners. There are new words, sentences and grammar rules one must learn in order to conquer the language. However, starting out small and learning new words and phrases through activities will help students remember French vocabulary, and practice will help them put together sentences and learn the language.
  1. Learning the Colors

    • Learn the colors in French by creating 10 different pieces of paper of 10 different colors. On an additional 10 pieces of paper, write the names of each color in French. For this activity, show students the colored pieces and let them choose the correct written piece for each color. When done, give the students the written pieces and tell them to match them with the colored pieces. In the end, test students by holding up each colored piece and having them say what color it is in French without help from the text cues.

    Learning the Clothing

    • Let each student wear a different garment or accessory. Ask each student what they are wearing and let them explain the outfit. When done, have students explain other students' outfits. Use the colors learned in the first section, so students can describe each garment in more detail. Rather than simply defining what it is, students will be able to explain the garment's characteristics.

    Learning How to Count

    • Learning how to count in French is relatively easy because of the similarities between the numbers. Start in the low numbers and conquer 10 numbers at a time. To make sure the numbers are not just remembered by memory, create simple math equations will fill-in-the-blanks. This way, students are not relying on their memory to help them recount the numbers, but they get to practice and know them.

    Learning the Time

    • Learning how to tell time in French is not very difficult after learning how to count and do simple math. Telling time in French is like a math equation; for example 1:45 in the afternoon is 2 o'clock minus 15 minutes. Have students explain what they are planning on doing at certain times of the day. It is possible to use the vocabulary of previous exercises, such as "I put on my green shirt at 8:15 am." Although all of the words may not be known, recognizing a majority of the words will help students complete full sentences.
