Strobe Light Dangers

Strobe lights are popular for a wide range of events. Dance raves are one of the most common places where strobe lights are constantly running. Aside from raves no haunted house during Halloween would be complete without a running strobe light making all the shadows and costumed people all the scarier. Finally, some hard rock bands also like to use strobe lights during their live shows. But there are many potential dangers to using strobe lights.
  1. High Voltage

    • A primary concern when using strobe lights is the high voltage. Whenever working with strobe lights, it is important to remember that the entire circuit of a strobe light is always on when it's plugged in. This means that it is never safe to work on any part of a strobe light when it is plugged in. A person who ignores this could be electrocuted. In addition to paying attention to the plug-in, the capacitors on a strobe light can hold a charge for a long time after being unplugged. This makes strobe lights dangerous to work on.

    Epilepsy

    • A second major documented concern with strobe lights is the potential danger of epilepsy. Individuals who have photosensitivity could be put at risk of an epileptic seizure due to a strobe light. Accounts have been recorded of individuals having seizures due to a pulsing strobe light. Even people who are not epileptic or not photosensitive still could be at risk for headaches, migraines, dizziness and nausea due to extended exposure to a strobe.

    Fire

    • The danger of fire cannot be ignored when using strobe lights. While strobe lights that are used as instructed pose very little danger of fire, these objects can become extremely hot and still have high voltage running through them. Contact with water should be avoided at all costs and for safety sake, should not be used around piles of easily combustible materials.
