How to Calculate the Pitch of a Propellor

A propeller's specifications, including diameter and pitch, affect the performance of your boat's motor. Similar to a car's axle ratio, pitch specifies the amount of distance the propeller would move in one revolution. It determines how much pulling power the motor can exert and limits maximum speed. Boaters can calculate propeller pitch to determine what propeller would be most efficient for their engine and type of boat.

Instructions

    • 1

Open your Web browser. Navigate to an online propeller calculator.

    • 2

Enter the maximum engine RPM for your motor in the "Engine RPM" field.

    • 3

Type the gear ratio for your motor in the "Gear Ratio" field.

    • 4

Enter the propeller slip (its efficiency rating) in the "Prop Slip" field. Use the average propeller slip of 30 percent to allow for inefficiency from drag.

    • 5

Press "Calculate." Record the value displayed for propeller pitch. Pitch is measured in inches per revolution.
