What is a first generation college student?

A first generation college student is someone who is enrolled at a college or university who has no parents that completed a four-year college degree. For example, your parent or legal guardian(s) may not have attended college, went to trade or beauty school, or may have started college but not completed their degree program. Other ways to say first-generation college student include: first-gen, first-generation or pioneer student.
