What is the Cumberland cross?

The Cumberland Cross is a stone cross located near Carlisle in Cumbria, England. It was erected by King Henry VI in 1459 to mark the site of a victory by Lancastrian forces over the Yorkist army at the Battle of Northampton during the Wars of the Roses. The cross is about 14 metres high and is carved from white sandstone. It features a number of religious symbols, including a representation of the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. The Cumberland Cross is a Grade II* listed building and is considered to be one of the finest examples of medieval stone carving in England.
