What was the first fraternity ever?

Phi Beta Kappa (ΦΒΚ) is generally considered the first collegiate fraternity in the United States. Founded in 1776 at the College of William & Mary, it was originally a secret society, but unlike later fraternities, it's now primarily an honor society recognizing academic achievement.
