How to Write an Essay for a Grad School Application

Essays are often the biggest part of an application for graduate school. Essays are usually a few pages long, and admissions officers want you to pick a topic that will help them get to know you better. Look at the essay as a way to make yourself stand out and make an impression on the admissions officer.

Instructions

    • 1

Brainstorm topics for your graduate school essay. Spend at least one week simply brainstorming topics that would be good for your essay. Consider writing about accomplishments, skills, tough situations in your life, successes, failures, plans for the future, personality traits or extracurricular activities.

    • 2

Choose a topic about which you feel passionate and can offer vivid supporting details. Be sure that you can supply enough information about the topic to write a quality essay without having to feel the need to inflate facts or stretch to find more details.

    • 3

Create an outline for your essay where every detail addresses the topic you have chosen. Spend several days brainstorming the details you can include and ways you can approach those details.

    • 4

Compose an introduction that will grab the interest of the admissions officer and convince them that they should keep on reading to find out more.

    • 5

Create a polished body of the essay including all of the relevant details in a logical progression. Make sure all the information in the body relates to the introduction and can be summed up with a conclusion.

    • 6

Write a conclusion that leaves the admissions officer impressed and feeling a sense of closure. You want to wrap it all up here and give a final comment that will nicely and effectively conclude the essay.

    • 7

Ask a professional to edit your essay to find any spelling or grammar errors. You can opt to hire someone or simply ask someone you trust to proofread your essay.
