Prerequisites for a Nursing Degree

Nurses work to help treat and educate patients about their health. Nurses must obtain a college education before they can begin work and there are certain prerequisites for a nursing degree. Some of the prerequisites will depend on the level of nursing you wish to pursue, but some are universal and apply to all nursing degree levels. These prerequisites must be satisfied prior to the first day of class.
  1. High School

    • Everyone who wishes to attend nursing school must have a high school diploma or GED, according to Education Portal. However, some high schools do offer some health care classes that could benefit aspiring nurses. Work-study programs that include work in hospitals or doctor's offices are also advantageous. It is important to explore your options with your high school guidance counselor.

    College Courses

    • Aspiring nurses must successfully complete required college courses to obtain a degree in nursing. These generally include anatomy and physiology, psychology, chemistry, sociology, biology, microbiology, statistics and nutrition, according to Nursing School Programs.

    Other Prerequisites

    • Many nursing schools require prospective students to become certified, in cardiopulmonary resuscitation, according to Education Portal. Other prerequisites include passing a physical health examination and being up to date with all vaccinations.
