How to Find the Right College Quiz

With all of your adult and career life ahead of you, choosing a college can be a daunting task. Where will you fit in? What course of study do you want to pursue? What if you choose wrong? To make the process just a bit easier, there are a number of online quizzes out there that can help you narrow down your search. Some quizzes focus widely on the type of personality you have and the ways you study while others are more specific about how you'll pay for college and your planned course of study. When you're not sure what road to take, the best course may be to take several different free quizzes and see how they stack up.

Ask your high school counselor about resources they may have for finding college quizzes or worksheets that help you determine your personality type. Write out a list of words that describe the type of college experience you are looking to have, and bring them to your next meeting with your counselor. If you don't have regular meetings set up, don't be shy; ask for a meeting where you can discuss your college plans.

Talk with your parents or guardians about the resources you may have when you go to college. Will they be able to pay any part of your tuition? Do they have resources or a plan for where you may live while in college? If you haven't had a direct conversation with your family about this just yet, there is no time like the present. Finding out as much as you can about your options will help you as you complete any "right college" quizzes.

Log on to MyUsearch, Channel One's College Finder Quiz, or U.S. News & World Report's "Best Colleges" web pages and click "start quiz" or a similar button to get started (see Resources).

All of these sites provide free quizzes to narrow down your college search, though MyUsearch is the only one that lists specific names of colleges that may work for your situation. To find other quizzes, do a simple Internet search for "right college quiz."

Complete as many quizzes as you can, trying to answer the questions as honestly as possible to get the most honest responses. Quizzes may take 10-15 minutes to complete.

While U.S. News & World Report and Channel One may only provide a general idea of what type of college you might fit with, after completing all of the quizzes, you may have a rough idea of what type of environment would work well for you. Write down any possibilities so you don't forget them.

Request information from the colleges that are recommended to you, or if you're in the area, schedule a tour to see what the school is like in person. Discuss your options again with your counselor or family to get their opinions about what may or may not work, but keep in mind that this is your journey and your future, so you should have the final say.
