The test measures the strengths and weaknesses in various academic areas. Regulations require that the person have a minimum score within each area. Examples of academic subjects tested include reading, writing and mathematical capabilities. The actual score necessary can vary by the test publisher and the test.
Administration of the ATB may take place at the college or another approved location. All exam forms and publishers of the exam must meet specific criteria prior to certification with the United States Department of Education. Without these credentials, the test is not valid and the individual can not obtain federal funding for college.
Federal requirements stipulate that all parts of the exam must be successfully passed to obtain eligibility. Failure in one or more area results in re-taking all test sections. Post-secondary institutions are allowed to charge for this exam and further attempts; this is at the discretion of the institution.
