How to Return a Student Pell Grant

The U.S. Department of Education's Federal Pell Grant Program provides undergraduate students with money for college. Pell grant money disburses to individual institutions who then send to students. Awards are based on your expected family contribution, the cost of attending your chosen institution and enrollment status. Pell grants don't have to be repaid like student loans, but changes in your circumstances may require you to decline a Pell grant offer or return money you already received. Your school's financial aid office is your best resource for sorting out any funding issue.

Instructions

    • 1

Decline the pell grant offer when you receive your financial aid award from your school. If you decide not to attend school after completing your financial aid application, it's easier to stop funding at this point before any money has been disbursed.

    • 2

Repay pell grant money directly to your school. If you receive pell grant money and then have to withdraw from school, you are expected to repay that money. You may be able to do this online if your school's student accounting services accepts online payments. If not, visit your school's payment office in person.

    • 3

Return a pell grant check to your school's financial aid office. If you receive a check, take the note back to the school unsigned and give to your financial aid counselor. Each school is different, so you may visit student accounting to return financial aid checks as well.

    • 4

Return any overpayments you receive with your pell grant money to student accounting. If your check or direct deposit is more than $25 above the amount of your award, you will be billed for that money. Schools are not allowed to seek repayment if the error is under $25.

Visit or call your school's financial aid office. If you have questions or concerns about returning pell grant money you can speak with a financial aid counselor.
