Analyze the situation. Determine what learning goals and objectives are to be achieved. Ask the following questions: What are the objectives? Who is the audience? What do they already know? Consider how the course will be delivered and what complications may arise.
Design your course. Storyboard ideas based on the learning objectives for the course. Consider graphics, user interface, and how they relate to the course's content. Gather all available resources. Determine what format you will use to deliver lectures. Also decide what formats would be best for posting documents--such as .pdf or .html--how objectives will be assessed, and any supplemental materials such as videos or podcasts.
Develop the online course based on the design from Step 2 using the Learning Management System (LMS) provided by your institution. Create files, assessments, and any assignments or activities students will use.
Implement the course. Deliver the materials for students via the institution's LMS. This system can vary from institution to institution, so seek instruction on the LMS you will use.
Evaluate the course. Provide opportunities for feedback from students in order to make revisions, if needed. Ideally, evaluation should take place after every step of the design process.
