Legal Issues With the Daycare on Campus

There are approximately 2,200 daycare centers on college campuses across the nation (as of 2010). Daycare centers on college campuses allow parents to complete school who could not otherwise afford it. Government legislation supports the advancement of childcare on campus programs, however these centers are not always held to the same standards as standard daycare centers.
  1. Supplement

    • The Campus Child Care Act was passed in 1998 to supplement the Higher Education Act of 1965. The Campus Child Care Supplement, as it is known, was passed as a means to assist low-income families. The supplement offers subsidies and sliding fee scales for child care tuition.

    Access

    • The Child Care Access Means Parents in School program is the most recent legislation from the Higher Education Opportunity Act. The law passed in 2008 and provides for government funds to support or establish child care programs on campus.

    Limitations

    • The majority of campus daycare centers began as clinical trials to provide experience for college students. Many campus daycare centers still employ students to gain experience, usually in early elementary education programs. In some states, campus daycare centers are not required to be licensed.
