Start working on the project early. By the end of your junior year, you need to get the application process in motion. If you procrastinate, you may miss the deadline for applications to write an honors thesis.
Check the regulations and make sure that you quality. Some universities, for instance, require that you have a certain GPA before you are eligible to write an honors thesis.
Pick a topic you are passionate about. Writing an honors thesis requires extensive reading and focused writing. Find a topic that excites you, because you are going to be spending a lot of time together and by the end of the thesis you will be a mini-expert on the subject.
Select an appropriate faculty adviser. Think about the different professors you have had for your classes and chose the one you think you would best get along with. Some faculty members are busier than others, so also identify second and third choices.
Set up a timetable and stick to it. Sit down with a calendar and figure out dates by which you will have the introduction draft finished. Mark in due-by times for outlined chapters. Print out your timetable and tape it on the wall behind your desk.
Develop regular work habits. Rather than leaving your honors thesis to the last minute, study, read and write regularly. Once it becomes part of your routine, it makes writing your honors thesis easier.
Take copious notes as you read. Whether you record the information--complete with all citation details--in a journal or on the computer, make sure you can find the quotations you need to support your statements when you are writing your thesis.
Write the draft freestyle and support your ideas with quotations. At this point be more concerned with the facts, figures and ideas. You can edit later.
Edit your work carefully. Make sure your honors thesis is accurate and meets the standards set by the university.
Meet with your faculty adviser and review your honors thesis. Take note of any recommendations and suggestions she offers and revise accordingly.
Format your final copy to meet the requirements of the university. Like a master's thesis, an honors paper has a title page, optional acknowledgments, list of tables, table of contents, body of the thesis and references. Print your thesis.
