Distance Learning Time Management Study Skills

Time management skills are very important for distance learning students studying at home. Distance learning differs from regular brick-and-mortar education because students do not have the structure and set times that are often found in traditional classrooms.
  1. Dedicating Time to Study

    • It is very important to ensure that you have the proper time to dedicate to lessons. When students lack the proper time and structure of a routine, their grades can suffer, and they may feel overwhelmed with the work they need to complete.

    Finding Inappropriate Study Times

    • As important as it is to set aside time for study, it’s also important to know what times are inappropriate for studying. For example, if you know of a certain time during the day when it's noisier in the space where you study, it’s best not to use this time for studying.

    Creating a Study Schedule

    • Create a schedule for your study time. List the hours of each day, and clearly mark whether they be dedicated to studying. Also note times in which you would not be able to study. Create a new study schedule weekly to keep up with changes to your routine.

    Managing Your Families' Schedules

    • Many parents choose distance learning due to time restrictions created by jobs and families. To manage time effectively, learn your work schedule and other family members' day-to-day schedules ahead of time, so your study schedule will face fewer disruptions. If children are in the home throughout the day, consider waking up an hour or half-hour earlier to study classwork that is harder than normal or to prepare for a test.

    Finding Time for Class Participation

    • While most distance learning courses do not require a student to be logged in at scheduled times, it is still important to allot time for class participation. Many classes require students to log in for a set amount of time per lesson. Another vital key to time management is to note when all assignments are due or when tests need to be completed. This helps to ensure that time has been set aside for those activities.
