National Senior Certificate (NSC)
* A NSC with a bachelor's degree pass
* A minimum APS score of 34
* A minimum of 70% in English (Home Language or First Additional Language)
* A minimum of 70% in Mathematics
* A minimum of 70% in Physical Sciences
* A minimum of 60% in Life Sciences
International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma
* An IB Diploma with a minimum score of 34 points
* A minimum score of 7 in English (A1 or B)
* A minimum score of 7 in Mathematics (HL or SL)
* A minimum score of 7 in Biology (HL or SL)
* A minimum score of 7 in Chemistry (HL or SL)
A-Levels
* A-Levels in Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics with a minimum grade of B in each subject
Other Qualifications
* Applicants with other qualifications may be considered on a case-by-case basis.
In addition to the academic requirements, applicants must also meet the following non-academic requirements:
* A good academic record
* A strong interest in medicine
* Good communication skills
* The ability to work independently and as part of a team
* A commitment to community service
The FMHS also considers the following factors when selecting applicants:
* Personal statement
* Letters of recommendation
* Extracurricular activities
* Work experience
Applicants who meet all of the above requirements will be invited for interviews. The interviews will be used to assess the applicant's motivation, aptitude, and commitment to medicine.
Selection Process
The Stellenbosch University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) uses a holistic approach to select its students. The FMHS considers the following factors when selecting applicants:
* Academic qualifications: The FMHS requires applicants to have a strong academic record, including a bachelor's degree with a high grade point average (GPA).
* Extracurricular activities: The FMHS looks for applicants who have been involved in extracurricular activities, such as volunteering, leadership, and research.
* Personal qualities: The FMHS looks for applicants who have the qualities that are essential for success in medicine, such as compassion, integrity, and empathy.
* Interviews: Applicants who meet the FMHS's academic and personal requirements will be invited for interviews. The interviews will be used to assess the applicants' communication skills, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving skills.
Admission Statistics
The FMHS receives approximately 2,000 applications for its medical program each year. Of those applicants, approximately 10% are admitted. The FMHS's average GPA for admitted students is 3.9.
