Do you get a degree or certificate for elementary school teaching first?

In the United States, you need a bachelor's degree to become an elementary school teacher. You don't get a certificate *first*; the bachelor's degree program itself incorporates the coursework and student teaching necessary to qualify for state certification or licensure. After completing the degree program and passing any required tests (like the Praxis), you'll receive your teaching license or certification, allowing you to teach.
