While most of the top universities in the United States are private schools (such as Harvard, Stanford and Yale), choosing a public university does not mean sacrificing a quality education. Several public institutions are among U.S. News and World Report's Best National Universities and also have earned recognition on The Princeton Review's list of the Best 371 Colleges.

    • The University of California Berkeley is U.S. News and World Report's top-rated public university, earning a No. 21 ranking on their list of Best National Universities. While The Princeton Review does not rank their overall Best 371 Colleges, Berkeley also appears on their lists of Best Western Colleges (no rankings) and 2010 Best Value Colleges-Public (no rankings).

    • Ranking closely behind Berkeley on U.S. News and World Report's list is another California school, UCLA.     • Tied with UCLA at No. 24 on U.S. News and World Report's list of Best National Universities is the University of Virginia.     • The University of Michigan is the fourth-best public university in the country according to U.S. News and World Report, coming in at No. 27 overall on their list of Best National Universities. UNC earned the twenty-eighth spot overall on the U.S. News list of Best National Universities.
