How to Start an Appeal Letter for College Denials

College admissions are becoming increasingly competitive. At the time of publication, a 2007 New York Times article cited that only nine percent of Harvard applicants were accepted, and goes on to say that the children of baby boomers are graduating at record numbers. The resulting increase in high quality high school applicants has created a situation where well-qualified students are being rejected from college admission. When a qualified student receives a letter of denial, writing a letter of appeal may be a prudent course of action. Learn to start your appeal letter with a well-written first paragraph that is concise, but convincing, and confident, but not pompous.

Instructions

    • 1

Write a short, convincing introduction explaining why you are now qualified for admission. Acknowledge the reasons for your denial of admission and state significant changes since the original application. Be specific and cite academic progress and any erroneous or incomplete information on your original application.

    • 2

List a major accomplishment that was not included in the original application, but shows your commitment to entering and completing college. Show that you are passionate about attending the school and you are not afraid of hard work.

    • 3

Elaborate on accomplishments related to your field and why you are ready to enter college. If you are transferring from a community college, give specific academic information that demonstrates your interest and knowledge in relevant subject matters. For example, for health related programs, mention that you are working as an intern at the community hospital and taking coursework in medical records management.

    • 4

Create a sense of urgency for the appeal panel. Demonstrate why the upcoming semester or quarter is critical for you to begin your college career. Be specific about your career goals after college, your plans for internships during college and your interest in the program you are applying to.
