Action Research Ideas on ADHD

College and university education programs may assign action research projects as part of their curriculum. Action research projects aim to solve real classroom and school problems through the use of research, inquiry, reflection and discussion in an effort to improve classroom instruction and/or increase academic achievement. Teachers implement action research plans in their own classrooms and analyze the results of their project. An action research project concerning Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) should seek to find solutions to typical problems experienced by students with ADHD.
  1. Attention

    • Students with ADHD struggle to pay attention in the classroom. An action research project could be used to find ways to improve attention and on-task behaviors in the classroom. Possible strategies to implement may include using personal timers, peer tutoring and allowing students to choose assignments to complete from a list of several assignments that all teach the same concept.

    Hyperactivity and Impulsivity

    • Some children with ADHD also display hyperactivity and impulsivity in the classroom. An action research project might propose solutions to decrease hyperactivity and impulsivity by implementing new behavior management techniques. Possible strategies to implement may include token reward systems, behavior charts and assigning students with ADHD special classroom jobs to allow them to move around in the classroom.

    Social Skills

    • Many children with ADHD struggle with using appropriate social skills. Inappropriate social skills may lead to classroom disruptions. An action research project could explore social skills intervention strategies, which may include the use of direct instruction in social skills, social skills role-playing and using collaborative groups in the classroom.
