Online training in fiber optics is available at a limited number of schools in the United States. Training programs involve approximately 40 hours of Web-based study. Students are allotted up to six months to complete the certified fiber optic technician course.
The course includes topics such as understanding metrics for fiber optics, designing and planning fiber optic networks, fusion splicing, indoor and outdoor enclosures, and testing and troubleshooting fiber optic networks.
Students undergo self-assessment through learning exercises during the program, and they take a final examination at the end. Graduates receive a certificate of completion and a total of four continuing-education credits.
