How to Compare College Transcripts for the U.S. & England

England and the United States share many similarities of language and culture, but their post-secondary education systems are different. In England, as in the rest of the United Kingdom (U.K.), students begin specializing in a chosen field early, while American schools favor more general education. Each system also has its own method of student evaluation. Comparing college transcripts between the two countries may be confusing but is possible. Whether you are a student who studied abroad or an employer seeking to hire a new graduate, some guidelines will help you properly evaluate a university transcript from England.

Verify that the school is a legitimate degree-granting institution. There are 157 such schools in the United Kingdom, with many more that are authorized to provide courses that may count toward a degree elsewhere. A comprehensive list of authorized institutions is available on the website of the U.K. Department of Business Innovation and Skills.

Convert the percentage grades into letter grades. World Education Services, which evaluates foreign transcripts for many American universities, indicates that 70 percent or higher equals an A, 65 to 69 percent equals an A-, 60 to 64 percent equals a B+, 50 to 59 percent equals a B, 45 to 49 percent equals a C+ and 40 to 45 percent equals a C. Individual institutions may have their own method for grade conversion, so if you are a study abroad or transfer student, check with your home university.

Calculate the credit hours for each class. Every institution has its own rules governing this process so ask for a school's specific credit-hour conversion chart. American schools typically award one credit hour per 12 to 15 hours of in-class instruction.

Identify the Honours Classification for completed bachelor degrees to assess a student's overall academic performance. According to World Education Services, First Class Honours is equivalent to an A, Upper Second Class is an A- to a B+, Lower Second Class is a B, and Third Class is a B-. A Pass is comparable to a C.
