Review basic arithmetic, if needed. If you need to brush up on the areas of the order of operations, multiplication, division, addition and subtraction, buy or borrow a book on basic arithmetic. Try the problems in the final exam and review section of the book to see where your weak points are. Confirm that you can do such problems before moving on to learning finite math.
Familiarize yourself with a scientific or business calculator. Read the manual that came with the calculator to learn how to use the calculator correctly. You will need a calculator to learn finite mathematics.
Buy a book on finite mathematics. When selecting a book, open to the table of contents and confirm that it has sections on financial mathematics, set theory and counting. These are the three main areas of financial mathematics that do not heavily rely on algebra. In addition, confirm that each of these sections contains practice problems and that the answers to these problems are somewhere in the book, usually in the back.
Learn financial mathematics. Read through the section on financial mathematics, taking notes on important concepts. At the end of each subsection, complete the practice problems. Make note of the practice problems on which you were unsuccessful. Review the concepts associated with these problems, and retest afterward. Repeat these steps with the section on set theory and again with the section on counting.
