How to Prepare Resume Samples for Students

High school English, careers and business teachers and college communication instructors normally teach proper resume writing as part of their courses. Rather than simply describing the components of an effective resume, students can benefit from viewing sample resumes that model exactly what potential employers are looking for. Teachers and instructors can prepare sample resumes themselves, based on a fictional identity and work experience. When creating a sample resume, choose work experiences, education and skills that are relevant to your students.

Instructions

    • 1

Search for a local job posting in newspapers or on the Internet that is relevant to your students' experiences, abilities or majors. Create a fictional name and address for your sample resume and include them at the top of the page.

    • 2

Find the name and address of a high school, university, college or trade school nearby. Choose a major that is relevant to your students. For example, if you are teaching engineering, list the major as civil engineering. Include this information under a heading "Education."

    • 3

Create several work experiences for your fictional person. Choose jobs that are related to the interests, abilities or academic majors of the students. So for an accounting class, list jobs at a financial institution, or, if your students are only in high school, choose jobs high school students are qualified for, such as retail, fast food, waiting tables or landscaping. For each position list typical job responsibilities and duties, such as counting money in the till for a retail job. Include this information under a heading "Work Experience."

    • 4

Write a heading called "Skills" that details skills and abilities relevant to the position. A resume for a teaching position will need to include statements like "Able to maintain classroom attention," for example.

    • 5

Create a category for relevant hobbies, at your students' level. Include only hobbies that are relevant to the job title. If students are in college, you may wish to eliminate this category altogether.

    • 6

List any awards or achievements, such as scholarships or training certificates, under a section titled "Awards and Achievements."

    • 7

Format margins so that they are uniform. Bold titles and headings and use bullet points for all listed information under each heading. Ensure all formatting is consistent throughout.

    • 8

Edit the sample resume for grammar, spelling and punctuation. Reword any awkwardness and tighten any long sentences.
