Types of Science Equipment

Science is a broad topic to discuss; there are so many different types of equipment that are used in science. These are categorized according to their uses. It is important to note that most of the equipment used in science labs should be handled with care.
  1. Observational Equipment

    • These tools are used to observe scientific experiments. They include microscopes, telescopes and binoculars. Microscopes are used to view objects or organisms that are too minute to be seen with the naked eye.

There are different types of microscopes which have different uses. The optical microscope uses natural light to view a number of specimens in the lab. The electron microscope is used when a more detailed image of the specimen is required. It bombards the specimen with electrons, measures the reflection and then the image is reconstructed on a computer. Another type of microscope is the scanning probe microscope which uses a probe that interacts with the specimen. The information is measured then digitally reconstructed on a computer.

    Measuring Equipment

    • There are a number of tools that are used to measure substances in the lab. They include the ruler and tape measure. When it comes to getting the circumference of round objects, a vernier caliper or a micrometer screw gauge may be used.

Graduated cylinders are used to measure liquids. They also make it easier to determine the density of certain liquids. A eureka can is used to determine the volume of irregularly shaped objects. A pipette may also be used when measuring liquids.

    Heating Equipment

    • When conducting various experiments, especially chemical reactions, a source of heat may be required. In some remote areas, a candle may be used, but a Bunsen burner is usually the preferred choice. If the experiment is being conducted in a lab, proper caution should be undertaken to prevent fire accidents. Sources of heat are not the only form of heating equipment. Boiling flasks and beakers also fall into this category.

    Dissection Equipment

    • Biology usually requires the dissection of certain specimens. A scalpel is a small sharp blade used to dissect a specimen. Forceps are also used to transfer the specimen or to hold the specimen in place. The samples are usually stored or placed in a petri dish.
