Courses in Nonverbal Communication

Nonverbal communication is the form of communication that we use most when interacting with another person. Nonverbal communication consists of our facial expressions, our posture when we communicate with someone and the gestures that we make. People can tell a lot about our mood, whether or not we like them and how genuine we are by our nonverbal communication. Many colleges offer courses in nonverbal communication.
  1. Business Communication

    • Business communication courses are available for individuals interested in furthering their communication skills related to a professional industry. These courses will teach you how your posture, gestures, eye contact, facial expressions and tone inflections all affect your professional interactions. If you are a sales person and you come off to a potential client as hurried and anxious, you may lose that potential client. If you learn how to appear confident, relaxed and eager to assist them, then you are more likely to attain and retain potential clients.

    Interpersonal Communication

    • Interpersonal communication deals with how we interact with our friends, family and peers. This may also be taught by marriage therapists to help clients learn to better communicate with one another. Because nonverbal communication is such a large part of our total communication it is important that we are aware of how our nonverbal communication--such as our facial expressions and gestures--affects those close to us.

    Workshops

    • Workshops are often one- or two-day courses that focus on one specific topic. Nonverbal communication workshops are offered by many different companies to teach the importance of nonverbal communication, how to raise your awareness of your nonverbal cues and how to make your nonverbal communication more effective when interacting with others.

    Social Communication

    • Social communication courses cover all aspects of communication. This includes verbal, cultural aspects and interpretation of communication and nonverbal communication. The nonverbal communication is addressed in terms of the social and cultural environment in which the communication is used. For example, a gesture that may be completely innocent in the United States may be viewed as extremely disrespectful in another country.
