How to Calculate TDS in Water

Total dissolved solids (TDS) in water are basically the mineral salts of calcium, magnesium, sodium and compounds of other elements such as iron and aluminum. The concentration of the total dissolved solids in a sample of water is measured in parts per million (ppm). This unit of measurement represents parts of dissolved solids in one million parts of water and dissolved solids combined. Measuring the total dissolved solids concentration by a digital meter is easy and quick.

Instructions

    • 1

Pour 100 ml of distilled water into a beaker.

    • 2

Remove the cap from the measuring tip of the TDS meter. Insert the measuring tip of the meter in distilled water. Stir the meter in distilled water to clean the tip effectively.

    • 3

Remove the meter from the beaker and shake it to remove the distilled water from the tip.

    • 4

Pour 100 ml of the water to be tested into another beaker.

    • 5

Insert the TDS meter in the water. Ensure the measuring tip is immersed in water and does not touch the bottom of the beaker.

    • 6

Turn on the meter by pressing the "On/Off" button. Wait for seven to eight seconds till the readings on the screen become constant.

    • 7

Note the reading from the screen. This is the TDS of the water sample.
