Just as there are several genres of writing, there are different ways to present a position. The data you have to support your paper may be very specific or it may be full of abstract ideas. It could be quantitative and focus on statistics or qualitative and report observations. You may not write comfortably in a voice that allows for a particular style of thesis. Finally, your instructor may tell you what kind of paper to create and you will need to decide which style suits that directive.
An analytical thesis statement breaks down an idea into segments and sets out to evaluate each. Your thesis statement will be clear as to what it is that you are evaluating and it will reveal the order of the segments to be examined. An example of this type of statement would be, "The Oprah Winfrey Show had a large TV viewing audience of women, more so then men, because of work-at-home patterns, topics covered on the show and the makeup of the studio audience." In this statement, your focus is on your perspective of the viewing audience. You are proposing to analyze the segments of work, show topics and the studio audience to support your thesis.
An expository thesis statement is more abstract as it attempts to present and explain an idea or concept. In this thesis statement, you will account for the abstract nature by breaking down the concept and organizing the parts into categories. The categories themselves can be sub-ideas or concepts. For example, "Being dedicated to vegetarianism requires a great deal of research, willpower and family support." The idea of being dedicated is just as abstract as the meanings of research, willpower and support. If this were your thesis, you would use the paper to explain what each of these mean to you in the context of vegetarianism.
An argumentative thesis statement starts from the outset with a singular and strong position that will be supported by your choice of examples and evidence. Because of this, your assertion must be presented in an assertive voice meant to convince the reader that you have or will show authority on this subject. "Triathletes push themselves to extreme physical limits and are more physically prepared to run long distances than regular marathoners" is an example. In this case, a strong assertion is made and the reader will expect you to support this point with evidence in your paper.
