Alternative Ways to Pay for College

Any way you slice it, college is an expensive venture. Tuition is exceptionally pricey and ever increasing, averaging in the tens of thousands each year. However, there are ways to pay for college without paying the costs up-front.
  1. Student Loans

    • Student loans can be taken out to cover the costs of tuition, fees, books and more. However, once the student graduates, he must choose a repayment plan, which can generally range anywhere from 10 to 30 years.

    Scholarships

    • Most colleges and universities offer a variety of scholarships to incoming or current students. These come from private funds, alumni or from the university itself. Criteria can be based on grades, activities and essays.

    Student Jobs

    • If a student is deemed to be in financial need, the university may be able to offer the student a part-time job. This job is for a certain amount of money per semester, and may end when the student reaches the amount.

    Outside Jobs

    • Students can generally find a part-time job off-campus or nearby that is flexible for their class schedule. Many students wait or waitress their way through school, among other jobs.

    Military Service

    • Students may join the military and have their time in service deferred until their schooling ends. Depending on the branch, service time and deferment periods can vary. However, much of the bill for college can be footed this way.
