- Percy is woken up by Grover, an old friend from summer camp, who tells him that they need to talk privately.
- Grover reveals to Percy that he is actually a satyr, a nature spirit who protects young demigods, children of gods and humans. He has been watching over Percy since the latter was a child.
- Grover tells Percy that he is a demigod, destined to become a powerful hero. However, his true identity needs to be kept a secret from the gods and monsters, especially Zeus (Jupiter), king of the gods, due to the prophecy of the Great Prophecy.
- Percy is hesitant to believe this revelation but becomes more convinced when he notices how he is treated differently at school and his strange encounter with Mrs. Dodds, his math teacher who turned into a Fury.
- Percy, still disbelieving, returns to the cabin with Grover, and they encounter two other campers: Annabeth Chase, a daughter of Athena (Minerva), and Luke Castellan, a son of Hermes (Mercury).
- The chapter ends with Percy, Grover, Annabeth, and Luke leaving camp for an unexpected journey.
