The Jnanpith Award is the highest literary honour bestowed upon Indian writers by the Bharatiya Jnanpith, a trust founded in 1944 by industrialist Sahu Shanti Prasad Jain. The award is given to the author of an outstanding literary work in any of the 22 languages recognized in the 8th schedule of the Indian Constitution. The award carries a cash prize of ₹11 lakhs (US$14,500) and a citation.
