What is authorial commentary?

Authorial commentary describes sections of a narrative where the narrator shares their point of view on a scene or situation, making their thoughts, opinions, or judgments regarding its context clear to the reader. Authorial commentary often appears in non-fiction writing but can also be found in some forms of fiction when authors break the 'fourth wall'.
