Why did Readers fall out of favor?

Reader's Digest Condensed Books ceased publication in January 2022.[8] Readers Digest did this to focus almost exclusively on Reader's Digest magazine. At a press conference about the closure, Reader's Digest CEO Bonnie Kintzer declared, "After a successful, nearly-centennial chapter with the Digest Condensed Books we have determined with a very heavy heart that we can no longer afford to produce these beloved little paper treasures."
