His Missa Papae Marcelli is a masterpiece of Renaissance polyphony, written for a choir of 40 singers. While not all 40 voices sing at the same time, the sheer number of parts involved in the complex, interwoven melodies is astounding.
While other Renaissance composers also wrote for large choral forces, Palestrina's Missa Papae Marcelli is arguably the most famous example of a composition written for such a large ensemble.
