Who was the Greek creator of pastoral poetry?

The Greek creator of pastoral poetry is widely considered to be Theocritus (c. 310 – c. 260 BCE).

While pastoral poetry existed before Theocritus, he is credited with being the first to elevate it to a high artistic level. His Idylls are considered the most important early works in the genre. They portray the lives and loves of shepherds and other rural figures, often with a focus on idealized simplicity and beauty.

Theocritus' work influenced later pastoral poets throughout history, including Virgil, Spenser, and Milton.
