What is the irony of situation in poem his strange language all I know there not a word fear?

In a word , the irony is that even though the soldier had just risked his life several time that day , he was not particularly aware of the danger around him until he spoke to girl whose language he did not understand. Only the presence of the language barrier, which rendered him literally unable to express the concept of fear, made the situation truly fearful for him.
