When was the Encyclopaedia Britannica first published?

The Encyclopaedia Britannica was first published in Edinburgh, Scotland, in 1768. It was originally planned as a three-volume work, but eventually grew to 100 volumes. The first edition was edited by William Smellie, a Scottish printer and publisher. The Encyclopaedia Britannica is one of the oldest continually published encyclopedias in the world.
