Why did Benjamin Franklin submit his articles to newspaper anonymously?

Benjamin Franklin did not submit his articles to newspapers anonymously. He was proud of his work and wanted his name associated with it. He commonly used a pseudonym, Richard Saunders, when writing his almanac, _Poor Richard's Almanack_, but this was to distinguish that work from his other pieces, not to cloak his identity.
