Why was the first newspaper in French instead of Spanish?

There is no historical evidence that the first newspaper was in French. The earliest known newspaper was published in China during the Tang dynasty (618–907 AD). It was called the Kaiyuan Za Bao and was published in the capital city of Chang'an.
