Is fiction written in dialog only?

Fiction does not have to be written solely in dialogue. Dialogue can be an effective tool for conveying character, advancing the plot, and making a story read, but most fiction uses a combination of dialogue and narrative to tell a story. Narrative prose is used to set the scene, describe characters, provide thoughts, and give context to the dialogue.
