What happens to dad in the book The Pigman?

In Paul Zindel's *The Pigman*, Mr. Pignati, who the boys call "Pigman," dies of a heart attack. He doesn't have a son or a dad in the traditional sense, although the boys act as a kind of surrogate family for him during the story. It is his death that serves as the tragic climax of the novel.
