What is the irony in short story The Hiding of Black Bill by O Henry?

The irony in "The Hiding of Black Bill" lies in the fact that when Dick Hall learns at last Bill had escaped, Dick Hall himself goes to prison for being in conspiracy with Black Bill when actually Dick Hall thought him killed and tried to help his widow.
