Did J.R.R. Tolkien write The Hobbit or Lord of the Rings first?

J.R.R. Tolkien wrote The Hobbit first, and then Lord of the Rings. The Hobbit was published in 1937, while Lord of the Rings was published in three volumes between 1954 and 1955.
