Why does Yuki erase Zeros memories vampire knight?

In the anime and manga Vampire Knight, Zero Kiryu's memories are not erased by Yuki Cross but rather sealed by Shizuka Hio as the result of Yuki stabbing him with the Bloody Rose as an alternative to killing him for her.
