Charles John Huffam Dickens was born on 7 February 1812, in Portsmouth, Hampshire, England. He was the second of eight children born to John and Elizabeth Dickens (née Barrow), and was named after his father. His father was a naval clerk and his mother was the daughter of a clergyman. Charles Dickens had six other siblings: Fanny, Charles Jr., Alfred, Letitia, Harriet and Frederick.
