Why do William sonnets have numbers instead of titles?

Shakespeare's sonnets do not have numbers instead of titles, they have both titles and numbers. Each of Shakespeare's sonnets is given a number, from 1 to 154, based on its position in the collection. Additionally, many of Shakespeare's sonnets also have titles or first lines that are commonly used to refer to them.
