Brontë was born on 21 April 1816 in Thornton, Yorkshire, England. Her father, Patrick Brontë, was an Irish Anglican clergyman. Her mother, Maria Branwell Brontë, died of cancer when Charlotte was only five years old. Charlotte and her three sisters were raised by their father and their aunt Elizabeth Branwell.
The Brontë sisters were all avid readers and writers from an early age. They began writing poetry and stories as children, and in 1846 they published a joint collection of their poems under the pseudonyms Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell. Charlotte’s _Jane Eyre_ was published the following year, and it was an immediate success.
After the success of _Jane Eyre_, Charlotte went on to write two more novels, _Shirley_ (1849) and _Villette_ (1853). She also wrote a number of short stories and poems. Charlotte Brontë died of tuberculosis on 31 March 1855, at the age of 38.
