_Unwind_ is a novel by American writer Neal Shusterman, first published in 2007. The novel tells the story of three teenagers, Conner, Risa, and Lev, who are all scheduled to be "unwound"—a process in which their bodies are harvested for organs to be transplanted into others. Conner is the son of a powerful political figure, and he is slated for unwinding because of a genetic condition that makes him unsuitable for organ donation. Risa is a ward of the state, and she is scheduled for unwinding because of her low socioeconomic status. Lev is the son of a religious couple, and he is being unwound because of his pacifist beliefs. The novel follows the three teenagers as they try to escape their fate and find a way to live.
The novel explores the ethical issues surrounding organ donation, as well as the role of government and religion in society. The novel also examines the themes of identity and self-determination.
_Unwind_ was a critical and commercial success, and it was followed by two sequels, _UnDivided_ and _UnSouled_. The novel has been adapted into a television series, which premiered on Hulu in 2019.
