Why did Anne Frank dad publish a diary?

Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father did not publish a diary. Anne's diary, originally written in Dutch was first published in 1947 under the title "Het Achterhuis" ("The Secret Annex") and was edited and prepared for publication by Otto Frank.
